SIDE BY SIDE, DUAH AND HAGGERTY TO DELIVER ON THE PROMISE; TRANSFORMING TENNIS
Side meetings at any world stage cannot be taken for granted
especially if it is about those with authority to make decisions and the
capacity to implement those decisions. There were many meetings at the margins
of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in
Portugal that ended on 28th September 2019, this piece takes a close
look at the meeting between the re-elected President of the ITF David Haggerty
and the President of the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) Isaac Aboagye Duah, of what
it means and the dividends such relationship will bring to the game of Tennis
at the international as well as the local level.
Isaac Aboagye Duah and David Haggerty |
Recording an overwhelming 60.5% to be re-elected as President
of ITF, David Haggerty is full of thanks to the delegates for entrusting
another four years into his hands but more than that he will look back and be
proud of his previous administration as the banner for his re-election. To his
credit, a transformed Davis Cup and Fed Cup plus the major headline news to all
tennis players around the globe, a World Tennis Number (WTN) a rating system
for all tennis players intended to bring harmony and equity to all competitions
around the world.
Riding on the forces of transparency, accountability and
integrity, Isaac Aboagye Duah has provided the kind of leadership that now
makes the Ghana Tennis Federation an attractive space for investors and those who
are interested in promoting the game. Working hard to make the Junior level the
West Africa power house, Duah is also revered for bringing Ghana to Davis Cup
zone 3 from an exiled zone 4, his policies has created a fertile ground for
private participation where four different foundations have been established
leading various developmental approaches in tennis.
When we put Duah of GTF side by side Haggerty of ITF, we see
beyond two men standing, what we see is a mutual commitment to transforming the
game especially at the junior level, an unwavering partnership to work together
to deliver the best approaches in addressing the challenges of the game be it
player development to upgrading of facility and the establishment of modern
infrastructure to support the rapid expansion of the game, we see in both men a
lifetime commitment to make tennis truly global and impact the lives of many.
Though Duah will be facing his own test of re-election come
October 2019, tennis enthusiasts have already relished a massive transformation
on the local front at the back of the bond created between the two leaders.
Whilst Haggerty will be focusing on mobilizing global resources to drive his
policies, it will be Duah among other National Association Presidents who will
be relied upon to implement the transformation agenda at the country level, in
the communities and villages.
We can but only wish both of them well in their pursuit and
when called upon it should be an honour to support them.
