PC of Suhum Constituency, Amanda Okyere in the U.S for the International Visitor Leadership Program
The
International Visitor Leadership Program is a Multi-Regional Project organized
by the U.S Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to
foster mutual understanding between the United States and other countries
through international educational and training programs.
Following
the program closely, this portal found out that Ghana’s Amanda Okyere is privileged
to be part of this year’s cohort, Amanda Okyere is the Parliamentary Candidate
for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Suhum
Constituency in the Eastern Region of Ghana and also double as a Research
Officer for the NDC. Touched by the desire to address the needs of the
vulnerable and the marginalized in society, she established the Amanda
Foundation that focuses on bringing relief to the poor and vulnerable through the
provision of technical and vocational assistance, distribution of clothes and
counseling activities.
Among
other things, it is the objective of the program to make participants learn
about the party development and cohesion as well as strategic communications,
to understand the development of democracy and civic education in the western
tradition, explore the triggers that cause electoral violence and cause elections
to fail whilst studying the role of the police and other security services in mitigating
risks to the electoral process and ensuring safety during protests.
As
part of her engagement in the program, Amanda will be meeting political
candidates, campaign organizers, party officials, state or local electoral
commissions, academics, media professionals, think tank experts, and representatives
of the electorate in key U.S states to provide an overview of the development of
democracy in the tradition of western countries and to also explore political
party development and cohesion.
The
reputation of the elite leadership program is to have trained hundreds of
fellows who have risen to prominent positions in their countries. In Ghana the program
can boast of haven trained former President J.A Kuffour, Dr. Kwame Addo-Kuffour,
Members of Parliament, Ministers of State and Diplomats from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, Judges, Lawyers, and Senior Journalist.
The
Multi Regional Project which is on the theme: Elections in Democracies, will
take participants touring Washington DC, Manchester, New Hampshire, Florida,
Columbus, Des Miones, Louisville, Minneapolis. Jackson, and Los Angeles in
California whilst they engage in different parts of the training and to also
touch base with the everyday life of American society.
About
5000 leaders have participated in this program and it is expected that after
the program they will return to their home countries to share the knowledge acquired,
scale up the impact of their work and to leverage on the networks and
partnerships formed with American business and government leaders to address
the challenges of their works in their country.
Congratulations
and good luck to Amanda Okyere, this portal will be following her engagement
closely and will report on her when she returns.
