CEDRIC DZELU REIGNS SUPREME AT ACCRA SENIOR OPEN


The much anticipated 17th edition of the Accra Senior Open was once again hosted on its traditional soil, the clay courts of the Accra Tennis Club in Osu from the 28th of November to 7th of December 2019 which featured about 150 players in 15 different categories.

At the end of the tournament, it was Cedric Dzelu from the AMTEC tennis club who was crown the new champion of Semi-Professional Singles category.

The campaign to the final nearly became a dream for Cedric with a low start when Jonathan Quaye, the defending champion dismantle him at the group stages but Cedric will quickly regroup to make it pass Ahevi Dodzi with a 6-0, 6-0 silencer and a walkover from Joshua Yamoah to guarantee a place in the quarter-finals where he was drawn to meet Jonathan Quaye again, haven done his homework, Cedric pulled what appeared to be a dominating win on Quaye 7-5, 6-3 and ousting Patrick Tenkorang in the Semifinals with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 to book a place at the finals.      

When the stage was set for the finals between Isaac Kwame Dapaah and Cedric Dzelu, it promised to be a tough match with Isaac being the favourite but as promised by Cedric in a pre-match interview, the Cobra came to the party as a warrior and took the first set 6-1 only to lose the second set 4-6 and will count on his stamina to get hold of the trophy with an 11-9 match tiebreak win.

In the Men's Pro Singles, Benjamin Fumi defeated Reginald Okantey 7-5 6-2 to win the championship, below are results of other categories.

The tournament coordinator Peter Annan at the closing ceremony thanked all for gracing the tournament and put on record that this year has been the best and he promises to work hard to make next year bigger.
